Reasons for Timber Harvesting
Are you thinking of a harvest for your timber stand? It could become one of those “the more you know, the more you realize what you don’t know” kind of events. There are several factors that come into play when contemplating a timber harvest.
Profit
Often timber harvesting is done for the money: owners hoping to get the top dollar for the stand, today! Timber harvesting using this method may leave little for regeneration and can be unhealthy for the forest. One method often employed in this situation is high grading. High grading is cutting out only the large diameter, high value timber, also known as diameter limit or single tree selection cuts, while leaving low value, suppressed and unhealthy trees and even inferior species to overtake the stand. These cuts produce handsome payouts today but little to no benefits for future timber harvests.
Pests or Disease
The most unfortunate type of timber harvesting occurs when stands have been damaged by disease, pests or weather, resulting with goals to clean up the mess and prevent further damage. Often the value of the timber has been compromised and landowners see reduced payouts. However, should this occur to your stand, not all is lost. A timber harvest done properly after a disaster will help the forest recover and may prevent unintended damage.
Wildlife
Some landowners wish to benefit wildlife. This timber harvesting method seeks to improve the health of the stand in ways that attract more grouse, turkeys and deer. These often produce sizable payouts to the landowner while also enhancing the land for wild game.
Silviculture
Timber harvesting may also be done to improve the health of the stand. This is called silviculture, which is the art and science of controlling the establishment, growth, composition, health and quality of forests and woodlands. This plan often has a long-term approach to the stand and allows for payouts today and additional planned harvests in the future.
Timber Harvesting Contract
At A.M. Logging, we ask questions that lead us to understand your forestland goals. From there we recommend a prescription. Once we have reached a verbal agreement on payout, a timber harvesting agreement is designed and executed. This contract protects both parties by spelling out the details relating to harvesting and payout. These contracts, like the prescriptions, are site specific and are tailored to meet the needs of the site and the landowner.
While A.M. Logging has continued to improve methods and has certainly improved the equipment, our ethical bases remain unchanged. We are committed to detail and excellence for every timber harvesting project we complete.
